15.40 Registration Upon satisfaction that the company's quality assurance system is in compliance with the appropriate ISO 9000 standard, the company will arrange for third party registration. This will involve having an independent third party agency conduct an on-site audit of the company's operations against the requirements of the appropriate standard. After the initial registration, this third party agency will perform periodic surveillance to assure that the company's quality system is being maintained. Many of the agencies will require a full re-audit after a specified time, typically three to four years. If the company subsequently fails to maintain the quality system, the agency will suspend or cancel the company's registration. Selection of a qualified agency to serve as the company's third party registrar should be performed carefully. It is important to use an agency that is recognized by other registrars especially in the countries the company is currently or is planning to do business. The following criteria should be followed in selection of a third party registrar:
  • Reputation
  • Competence of Auditors
  • International Recognition (RvA & NACCB)
  • Accreditation (Are they certified for your scope)
  • Experience
  • Cooperative Attitude toward the company
  • No conflict of interest with the company (e.g. consulting)
  • Cost
  • Availability
  • Location (extensive travel can dramatically affect the total audit cost)
Upon successful completion of this audit, the company will receive a registration certificate that identifies the quality system as being in compliance with ISO 9001, 9002 or 9003. The company will also be listed in a register maintained by the third party registrar. The company may publicize this registration and use the third party registrars certification mark in advertising; letterheads and other publicity materials but it can not be used on the actual product itself.
