Suicides Prompt France Telecom Rethink

France Telecom is suspending its controversial restructuring programme after 25 workers committed suicide in 18 months.

France Telecom staff protest over the suicide rate at the company

The company said it would push back any changes until the start of next year.

The former state-owned firm is in the middle of a major modernisation drive as it struggles with increased competition in the global recession

But the move has been blamed for a surge in suicides and attempted suicides in the company.

The latest death saw a father hang himself at his home in Brittany last week.

And another worker was saved at the last minute from taking his life earlier in the week.

Chairman Didier Lombard has accepted the company, which has laid off 22,000 of its 100,000 workforce in the last three years, is in the midst of a ’suicide spiral’.

After intense public criticism, he has taken a range of measures aimed at easing the pressure on staff, such as suspending all internal job reshuffling.

Some 10,000 employees have changed jobs in the past three years.

Mr Lombard has also hired 100 additional advisers and launched negotiations with unions on workplace stress.
